Product Description

Product description of sapphire fiber

Sapphire is a material resistant to chemical corrosion and scratching, with a melting point of 2,072°C. MMI offers LHPG grade sapphire fibers with diameters ranging from 25 to 500 μm. Additionally, fibers with expanded ends through tapering are available. This is an important feature as the flexibility of the fiber varies inversely with the fourth power of the diameter (for example, a 100 μm fiber has 16 times the flexibility of a 200 μm fiber). Tapered fibers offer users high throughput capabilities without sacrificing flexibility in energy transmission and spectral applications. PTFE sheathing and/or connectors are available for fibers with diameters greater than 100 μm.

Fiber orientation C-axis
Melting point 2,072
Tensile strength 2,200 MPa
Damage threshold 1.3 kJ/cm2 @ 3 μm
Numerical aperture 0.45 (300 μm fiber, 1m)
Attenuation 0.5-1.0 dB in near IR (1m, 300 μm)
Bending loss 3% for 3cm dia.loop (100 μm fiber)

Product Features about sapphire fiber

  • High-Temperature Resistance: Sapphire fiber can operate at temperatures up to 2000°C without damage or degradation, making it especially suitable for high-temperature environments.
  • Chemical Stability: Sapphire material has high resistance to most acids, bases, and other chemicals, ensuring its stability even in challenging chemical environments.
  • Mechanical Strength: The mechanical strength of sapphire fiber is high, providing excellent resistance to abrasion and impact.
  • Optical Transparency: Due to the purity of its material, sapphire fiber possesses a high degree of transparency in the visible and near-infrared regions.
  • Broad Bandwidth: Sapphire fiber is capable of transmitting light signals across a wide range of wavelengths.
  • Biocompatibility: Sapphire fiber is harmless to most biological entities, making it particularly useful in medical applications.
  • Radiation Resistance: For certain nuclear applications, sapphire fiber demonstrates good radiation resistance.
  • Long Lifespan: Thanks to its wear resistance and chemical stability, sapphire fiber has a long service life in many applications.

These characteristics make sapphire fiber an ideal choice for a variety of high-end and challenging applications, including sensing, medical imaging, high-temperature measurements, and nuclear applications.

Sapphire fiber's Application
